Sales girl imprisoned for diverting sales proceeds to boyfriend

A 33 year-old sales girl, Tine Joy, has been sentenced by a Grade 1 Area Court in Karu, Abuja, to seven months imprisonment on Tuesday for
criminal breach of trust and diversion of sales’
proceeds to her  boy friend.

According to the Prosecutor, Mr. Ashasim Helen, he made it known to the Court that, the defendant was
arraigned for criminal breach of trust, cheating
and criminal misappropriation punishable under
sections 314, 322 and 309 of the Penal code.

The Judge prevailing over the case, Mr. Hassan Ishaq, was reported to have  given Joy an option to
pay N18, 000 as fine. As he also ordered her to pay the
complainant, N62, 000 as compensation.

The prosecutor, Mr. Helen furthered  alleged that the complainant, Godwin
Ola, of Army Estate, Kurudu in Abuja, reported the matter at Karu Police Station on July 14.

Speaking further, he made it clear that, the complainant had
sometime in May, employed Joy as a sales girl in his garment shop located in Karu.
Adding that, Joy defied
her employer’s instruction of daily record
keeping and remittance of all sales proceeds
to him at close of work.

The prosecutor then told the court that on July 7, Joy refused to remit the sales of
proceeds to her boss at the close of work as she converted the sum of N62, 000 to her
personal use.
Meanwhile, Helen informed the court that, all efforts by the
complainant to recover his money from Joy was to no avail until she was
arrested by the Police.
Mr Helen further said Joy
confessed during Police investigations to have
given the money to her boyfriend, Noah Solomon by name.
Meanwhile, Joy later pleaded guilty
and begged the Court to temper justice with
mercy as she will return the money if more time is given to her.
